We’ve been interested in facial rollers for a while now; a luxury spa staple, our obsession was cemented when Alicia Key’s makeup artist stated it’s what she used to get her signature glow for her famous #nomakeup appearance at the VMAs a few weeks ago that caused a beauty media storm. Victoria Beckham, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kim Kardashian and Daisy Lowe are also reported fans.
Facial rollers are like a regular gym workout for the face. New York facialist Ling Chan, who grew up in Hong Kong, regularly uses the tool on her black book of model clients (think Behati Prinsloo, Dree Hemingway, and Miranda Kerr). “Just as exercise can tone your body, a facial roller can tone your face,” she explains of its ability to clear fluid, boost circulation, improve elasticity, and promote cell turnover for a brighter, healthier skin. At her namesake spa in Union Square, she also glides the roller over skin after applying a mask to help the product further penetrate the skin—a process she says can be re-created at home, whether in front of the TV or lying in bed. “Just a few minutes of massage is very anti-aging. We overuse the muscles in our face—whether we bite our teeth or stare at the computer for too long. The roller can break through the blockage.”
Jade is an incredibly precious stone worshiped for years in China, and jade facial rollers have been found in tombs dating back 1500 years as they were part of the beauty range of every powerful woman. It is ideal for facial rollers because it’s defining feature is that it is always naturally cold, amplifying the soothing and de-puffing benefits of a roller. It’s also considered a cleansing stone, used in Chinese medicine for centuries to aid the body's filtration organs and lymph system to expel toxins. The healing properties of jade and the deep massaging action transform your skin and facial contours making you look younger and healthier.
Is there anything it can’t do?!
Starting with a freshly cleansed and toned face, apply a generous amount of your serum, face mask or facial oil. Using broad, gentle sweeps, the general idea is to always work away from the nose area. Roll across the forehead, around the eye sockets, cheeks, jaw, neck and chest area. Place vertically on your sinus area, rock gently and then roll away from the nose to the edge of your face to clear blocked sinuses. Pay special attention to the jawline where congestion is prone to build up, rocking the jade roller vertically in the crevice where your neck meets your ear and finish by rolling it down towards your collarbone to aid in drainage.
TOP TIP - Store in the fridge and use on your temples to ease headaches and hangovers or when you need an extra de-puff (the Christmas bloat season is fast approaching us after all). Use several times a week or every day, if you’ve got the time, for optimal results. Just 2 minutes should do the trick but the longer the better!
